glimpse of the beautiful environment of your future vacation destination!

Perched atop Costa Rica’s continental divide, Monteverde rests high above the coastal towns that sprinkle the shoreline. It is a magical place of mist, monkeys, cloud forests, and coffee. The sheer amount of biodiversity that
can be observed in this “green mountain” (Monteverde’s meaning in Spanish) is incredible, making it the reason why thousands of biologists and regular nature lovers flock to Monteverde every year.

Due to its high altitude—some 4,662 ft (1,440 m) above sea level—Monteverde receives a steady supply of clouds
and the life-giving moisture that they contain. Often in the form of fog, this moisture catches on the branches of
the tallest trees and drips down to the other organisms below. Water is life, and nowhere is this more clear than in Monteverde where the constant abundance of moisture is coupled with a complex and far-reaching ecosystem of staggering diversity. This ecosystem boasts over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands
of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties of plants, 420 of which are orchids alone!

Visitors can explore this internationally recognized environment from trails and trams, in gardens and museums, or along canopy tours. After a long day of adventure, the sleepy town of Santa Elena is a perfect home base. Small
and quaint, it has just the right amount of shops and delicious restaurants to choose from. A trip of a few days is recommended to appreciate this verdant and mountainous region.
